The 10th Anniversary edition of Vigilantes of Love, John Everson's second book-length collection of tales of short fantasy and the macabre, includes a new preface by the author and six additional stories not present in the original release!

A woman whose life is shaped and doomed by the "Calling of the Moon"...

A girl who learns the secret powers of the "Seven Deadly Seeds"...

A boy who finds that the power of music can open a hidden world thanks to a flute hidden in the attic...

A man who learns the meaning behind the voodoo curse that brings the "Vigilantes of Love" from the hearts of the New Orleans swamps to punish the adulterers under the light of the full moon...

Vigilantes of Love offers these and many more tales of dark magic, the macabre and things that happen when you go one step beyond. Vigilantes of Love was originally issued in 2003 by Chicago-based Twilight Tales, a year before a limited edition of Everson's first novel, the Bram Stoker Award-winning Covenant, was released. While Everson's first book of short fiction, Cage of Bones & Other Deadly Obsessions, focused on erotic horror, Vigilantes of Love was something of a flip side -- this collection offers light and dark fantasy tales, mixed with the occasional slice of horror.

The Dark Arts Books 10th Anniversary edition of Vigilantes of Love is an expanded release that includes six never-before-collected Everson tales -- including his first horror publication, "Learning To Build" -- alongside Vigilantes of Love's original 15 dark fantasy and horror stories. The book includes the voodoo-zombie oriented title story, written especially for the collection, as well as "Calling of the Moon," which received an Honorable Mention in the Year's Best Fantasy & Horror anthology, and "Lovesong" a 5th Place winner in the 2000 World Horror Convention Fiction Contest.

I reviewed Vigilantes of Love's maiden release and enjoyed it tremendously. I reviewed it for Horror World and the following are portions of the review.

There are several stories in Vigilantes of Love that I would consider not only above average, but superb. Quite simply, they are among the most enjoyable short stories that I have read in the past few years. Everson managed to put an emotional spin into these tales that affected me so deeply that I paused for awhile after reading each one. And it was not because any of these stories were overly intense, in fact, I thought their approach subtle, but still, they managed to pack one heck of a punch.

My favorite was 'Calling of the Moon', a tale about an old woman who befriends a homeless man and helps him turn his life around. The story is told from the homeless man's point of view and it is so life affirming and well written that when it was over, I went back and read it again.

My second favorite was 'Lovesong', a story about a young music lover who falls for a girl that works in a record shop. Everson nails the narrative perfectly when detailing the alienation and desperation a young man that age lives with. Everson portrayed him so realistically that I had no trouble identifying with the main character and could more than relate to the feeling of longing this young man had for the counter girl. And best of all, I didn't see the end of this one coming.

Another stand out is the title story, 'Vigilantes of Love', a tale set in New Orleans about a voodoo curse that has unfaithful lovers snatched away in the night and disappearing forever as punishment for their cheating ways. The lead characters loneliness and angst, along with his willingness to forgive her after his wife is taken away, will stay with readers long after the story is finished.

Several other stories have these same heartfelt and emotional (but often depressing) themes in their plotting. 'Seven Deadly Seeds' tells the story of a young girl who's neglected parents pay a steep price for their selfishness when she meets a witch who gives her some seeds to plant in her basement. 'A Time for Music' relates the tale of a young boy who finds a flute that will magically whisk him away from a home where he believes no one loves him. And, 'The Right Instrument' is a shocker about a musician who loses his muse and a friend who comes to the rescue with a special piano.

I can't think of any single author collection in recent memory that was as enjoyable to read as Vigilantes of Love. With the addition of six extra stories you can bet that I will be purchasing this one again. At under a dollar, the price is certainly right.

Vigilantes of Love 21 Tales of the Dark and Light John Everson 9780615808604 Books Reviews

"Vigilantes of Love" is the kind of book that once you open it, you cannot put it down until you've finished reading it from cover to cover. And I'm not just saying that because I'm a huge John Everson fan. Each story was brilliantly written and complements the story preceding or following it.

John Everson has an uncanny knack of creating characters that not only jump off the printed page, but they can actually slap you if they wanted to. Add to that his brilliant writing style and you have masterpieces of fiction and horror that will keep you pleasantly busy reading more of his work.

I enjoyed all the stories in the collection, but my favorites are "Calling of the Moon" and "Seven Deadly Seeds". I highly recommend it to all other John Everson fans and fans of horror and dark fiction who love stretching the threshold between reality and fantasy.
As a reviewer, when I review books of short stories I give each story a rating then I average them together for the final score. None of the stories in this collection were below 3 stars. Some of the stories were whimsical and some were horrifying but all were good. Another winner from the mind of John Everson! A solid 4 star read.
I know that John Everson is somewhat known for his more "adult" horror novels, but this collection was my first exposure to him, and it proves that he is not a one-trick pony, but a writer who can stretch and explore different types of stories.

Vigilantes of Love is a collection that is full of magic. Some of it gentle, some of it dark, but almost all of it lyrical and affecting. The stories here are written with a sure hand, they flow naturally and aren't overwritten. The writing is stylish and almost poetic at times, but always accessible. Even when he is writing about truly horrible things, there is always a beauty to the tales.

My favorite tales in the bunch are "Love Song," "The Fifth Step," and "The Humane Way."
Really outstanding stories. They were so much more than Steven King's "First, kill all the pets." and how many bizarre ways can you kill off characters. One story I had to go back & read the ending twice. It was so subtle I had to be sure I understood it. Every story made me stop & think.
i had the hardcopy of this book, and loved it. A friend once borrowed it, and then someone else borrowed it from them, and i never got it back (
More distasteful than bad. Some of the stories are pretty entertaining, others terrible, but on average not worth the time it takes to read them. This author has written much better collections.
I got this book and thought it was going to be just another romance, but it was reasonably priced but figured it is good for passing time on a plane. I read it and it is a mixture of macabre, eerie, fantastical and just plain good. Not all the stories are equally engrossing but overall, I liked it well enough to buy it again for a gift.
