The young black man with the calloused hands wants to make a break with his past, a near thirty-year criminal career marked by drugs, violence and shattered lives. Before him is Jack Lawrence, a retired Lockheed Martin manager who believes in second chances.
Neither man suspects that together they are about to embark on a seven-year journey of trust, backsliding, hope, disillusionment -- and ultimately, redemption.
Ryker James, Jr. is the son of a crack dealer in Fort Worth, Texas. His father was the brother of Honey, Fast Buck, and Jimmy-Earl James, who were drug lords from the Bloody Fifth in Houston. Though Ryker spent thirty years of his life dodging shootings, running from the law, and inwardly resisting the life he was born to, he didn't see a way out -- until now.
Months pass, then years. Ryker is Jack's captive audience, learning everything he can from this seventy-year-old white man. Despite their difference in age, culture, and experience, Ryker learns to trust Jack. And against all odds, Ryker emerges with a new life and renewed hope.
You'll find yourself rooting for him, right alongside Jack, up until the very end, just like you may have cheered for Aibileen, Minny or Skeeter in Kathryn Stockett's The Help or Michael Ohr in Michael Lewis' The Blind Side. Seventy Times Seven demonstrates the power of seventy years of wisdom and experience and the value of dogged persistence during the seven years it takes to get Ryker out. Ryker James' story represents a triumph of the human spirit. Seventy Times Seven is a tour de force that reveals the hopelessness and despair endemic in a hidden America, and the irresistible power of faith and trust.

A well written story of the destructive depths that binds men and women into the life threatening addiction of drugs and alcohol. This is the incredible determination and journey of one elderly man who has faith in and mentors one such addicted "criminal" to a new life. We are brought to the heart of forgiveness beyond counting the times, of reconciliation that can occur more than once, of the unwavering faith of Jack, an elderly white man, as he works unceasingly to earn the trust of this young black man. We witness the gradual change that takes place as Ryker makes his way forward to recovery by three steps forward and falls back two . Over a seven year period Jack and Ryker become a team to find this addicted young man a new and clean life, a decent job, a family and the courage to finally let go of his old binding and imprisoned life of drugs. We are reminded of the difficult journey that lies ahead for anyone who has an addiction, yet struggles to be 'clean', falling backward and starting over again and again and with God's grace and as with Ryker, through the faith of another, finds new life, a new beginning and freedom from the old destructive ways that brought him down again and again. Excellent read for anyone who has experienced or is experiencing an addiction of any kind.

Seventy Times Seven eBook Mary Ellen Wellbaum Simone Oliver Geoff Campbell Reviews

I didn't know quite what to expect when I picked up Seventy Times Seven, but I must say I was pleasantly surprised to read this gritty, gripping tale of redemption. Mary Ellen Wellbaum has created two compelling characters and put them in a situation where you'll want to keep turning to pages to find out what ultimately happens to them.
I started reading this book at a friends house last week. I asked to borrow it and finished it over the week-end. I think the characters are very believable.. "warts and all", so to speak. Just when I thought a Christian's noble and selfless work was making progress, I would then have to deal with a problem that made me think the Christian friend was surely being lied to and "taken". The plot is very real. Life can be dismal. But the author kept reminding me that many lives take a lifetime to affect change in our society. There is hope in forgiveness.
Seventy Times Seven gives us a glimpse of the lives of two people striving to follow their calling - one who mentored others upon rejoining life after prison and one who, upon leaving prison, strived to make a change in his life when he knew he was headed down the wrong path. I found the characters to be intriguing, real, and I rooted for both of them at the same time. Their journey reminds us that at times, we may fall back into what is easy but we can also get back up, regain our resolve and fight for what is right. Seventy times seven. Sometimes change doesn't happen over night.
If you decide to read this book - spoiler alert! Just when you think the story is coming to a close, hang on - the best part is yet to come!
The characters just didn't seem believable to me and I found the book depressing. Reading about drug dealers and criminal activity is not uplifting or inspiring. I pray that the people in this book if they exist, find redemption.
This book was a powerful read. It was very well written and left me wanting more. The story was easy to follow and didn't contain length and unnecessary descriptions At the end, it made me want to reach out and help others and make a difference. I recommend everyone to read this book. I am not a religious person and did not find this book to be all about that. It is a book about having compassion for mankind and believing that people can really change and become better people.
